Globalisation - Now we get it

Jonathan Samuels - 13 September 2011

A massive macro-economic week ahead of us, with inflation (tomorrow), unemployment (Wednesday) and retail sales (Thursday) offering us a further insight into the health - or otherwise - of the UK's economy.

I can't say I'm particularly confident about what will be revealed this week. Unemployment is going to start nudging up again at some point as the public sector job cuts begin in earnest and I expect the retail sales data to be particularly bleak, as consumers really are retrenching right now given the storm clouds forming over the UK and global economy.

Perhaps now we are really only beginning to understand what globalisation actually is. A concept that was abstract to many only a matter of years ago is now becoming more and more concrete by the day.

I mean, have so many people ever been so aware of how unemployment in the US, the slowing of the German economy or the ability of Greece to pay down its deficit, could directly affect them here in the UK?

More extraordinary still, have so many Brits ever understood how yields topping 6% in Italy is bad for them? They may not understand the minutiae of yield trends - and who does! - but they understand that very high yields means someone somewhere is panicking about something.

In other developments, early on Monday morning the Independent Commission on Banking, led by Sir John Vickers, concluded that banks should indeed ring fence their 'casino', or investment banking arms.

Now it's over to Number 11 to see whether this crucial recommendation, which any sane person would surely support given the calamity of 2007/08, is implemented. Over to you, George
